Central Highlands Region

The Central Highlands Region consists of the Central Cordillera Mountain Range, and parts of the Tilaran Mountain Range. It contains both active and dormant volcanoes, connecting Costa Rica with the Pacific Ring of Fire. This area is also a part of the continental divide that extends from Alaska through to Panama.

Visiting Costa Rica brings one into close proximity with a multitude of activity and four different volcanoes, the Poás, Barva, Irazú and Turrialba, make this area on of the most active in the country! Deep movements from the earths inner crust, combined with compressed gases cause regular volcanic activity. The highest peak in the Cordillera Central and Costa Rica’s highest volcano is Volcan Irazú at 3,432 m / 11 257 ft. Collections of cloud forest characterize this area with density and moisture creating a refreshing atmosphere, quite different in natural diversity when compared with areas of lower elevation. Varieties of Pine are unmistakable and the national bird, the Clay Colored Robin, is also commonly seen.
