Northern Lowlands Region

The Northern Lowlands Region was historically the poorest area of Costa Rica. Tourism is helping the people of this region by creating more jobs and business opportunities. In La Fortuna de San Carlos the tourism industry literally exploded with the Arenal Volcano, one of the most visited attractions in the country.

Part of this region is commonly known as the Caribbean Lowlands. It is a large area of rivers and watershed from the Tiliran cordillera and other mountain ranges in the country. Vast movements of moisture are constantly being blown in off the Caribbean Sea and circulated through the system making this region particularly desirable for white water rafters and river kayakers.
